Public debate has been intensified with the legal developments around the removal of activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest site.  A public interest litigation, seeking an FIR against Delhi Police over Wangcuk’s removal, was recently dismissed by the Delhi High Court. Separate proceedings enabled his transfer to a private hospital due to deteriorating health. Meanwhile, marches and solidarity campaigns continue to be organised by the supporters across several Indian cities. Concerns have been triggered within human rights groups over the handling of peaceful demonstrations. As the protest enters another phase, there is a shift in focus from a single activist to broader questions surrounding civil liberties, democratic dissent and public accountability.
